His gloved hand hovers in waiting. He'd offered it on impulse; something spontaneous. There was no ulterior motive here, after all. Nothing he hoped to gain. Nothing he expected to transpire. The royal prince simply wished to cheer her up as he had when they'd been together, in those early days of budding romance. Simpler times.

It seemed to him that she was willing to play along— even if only for tonight. The confession he'd made all those months ago in the realm of the DRK TRIAD had rung true and exposed his awful lie. To so willingly break her heart like that was unforgivable, even despite the good reasons he'd employed. Nevertheless, in the midst of this masked and mostly anonymous affair, the notion of putting the past aside and enjoying each other's company seemed easier.

This is probably a bad idea.[break][break]

There's a moment of hesitation when the prince offers his hand. Luka stares at him like he's gone mad, though the intricacies of her expression are thankfully lost behind the mask. She shakes off the initial surprise and tries to appear nonchalant, though the stuttering thump behind her ribs threatens to shatter that thin veneer.[break][break]

Why he wants to dance with her is a mystery. They aren't lovers. And given everything that had happened between them, they'll probably never be friends.[break][break]

Perhaps, then, the only way for them to be together is as strangers.[break][break]

But their hands know each other and as soon as they meet, it's almost impossible to play pretend. Luka swallows hard as she stares at their intertwined fingers, the warmth of his palm seeping into her own. Her eyes flit downwards a moment later, unable to even glance at the mask that shields her from him.[break][break]

Despite all the time that's passed, her heart is still broken. When she takes Remiel's hand, she can feel it start to mend. Eventually, she'll leave him and it will break again.[break][break]

It's only one night. What's one more heartbreak?[break][break]

"I can't imagine what might be troubling you, Monsieur," she says softly, watching the folds of her dress as they glimmer under rays of falling starlight, "But I hope a dance can remedy that...at least for a little while."

Remiel had nearly forgotten what it was like to hold her dainty hand in his. As a matter of fact, he never expected he'd ever get the chance to do so again. Even through the thin fabric of his gloves, her warmth reaches him with pleasant familiarity. And, despite a pang of longing, he's reminded of brighter days and sweeter nights with her by his side.

"You're too kind, my lady," The Galarian responds, holding her hand gently and issuing a regal bow. "Though I hope this serves to take your mind off whatever ails you as well." He adds, straightening from his bow to set eyes upon her once more. With grace and fluidity of motion, the masked prince places one hand on her hip while the other sets them in position as their bodies draw closer together.

The sudden intimacy between them is foreign after all this time. Though, by nature, a waltz such as this demands it.

"Shall we?"

It won't, of course. She's fairly sure they both know that; that sweetened words and a simple dance will never be enough to undo what happened between them. But even so, being able to hold him again, even if only for a moment, takes a bit of the edge off.[break][break]

There's something compelling about the music, the peace of the insecterium, the feeling of entwined fingers and his hand on her waist. It brings back memories of when they'd first met, and Luka understands why she'd been so enchanted by him in the first place. Even now, his dark eyes continue to draw her in, and she finds herself stepping closer as they begin to dance.[break][break]

She's always liked to waltz, because it always makes sense. One two three, one two three. A gliding step. A twirl. It allows her time to think as they spin together underneath the moonlight, to choose her words as carefully as magic spells.[break][break]

"I'm surprised you— someone like you— is alone tonight," she muses. Shameful perusing of the tabloids has informed him that the Prince hasn't ceased in his dalliances. It's a petty thing to bring up, but at least she can mask it as simple curiosity for now. "Don't you ever feel lonely?"

"I could say the same of you, fair lady," He responds, effortlessly guiding their movements as they sway to and fro. Perhaps he was wrong to think so, but he would have imagined Luka swiftly finding another to take his place. Remiel didn't consider himself all too special, anyway. Even despite all of his titles, wealth, and achievements.

"Loneliness finds us all from time to time, does it not? It is integral to the human condition. However, I suppose... sometimes I find it is better to be alone than to be in the company of someone you might accidentally end up hurting... or vice-versa."

He's not entirely wrong.[break][break]
There have been others since him, but they're all just filler. Warm bodies to stave off the loneliness, hands and hearts that she'd tried to reach out to, but that had never reached back in the same way.[break][break]
No one did. Perhaps no one ever would. Luka thinks of all the people she’s given bits of heart to in the past year, and none of them had returned her fervent ardor. None of their hearts ached the same way hers did.[break][break]

There’s only one common denominator amongst all of them: it’s her.[break][break]

She’s simply an unlovable girl.[break][break]
In that regard, Remiel is just one of many, so she doesn't know why she can't forget him. At this point, they've been broken up for about as long as they were together. But love, she supposes, has never been a rational thing.[break][break]

The prince continues speaking before her own sorrowful thoughts get the best of her, and her eyes flit back to his face in surprise. "Is that why—" she stops herself just in time, popping the bubble of hope that dares to rise in her chest.[break][break]

"I think," she says instead, staring at the gilded edges of his mask and trying to imagine the expression he wears underneath it, "That that's not a decision you should make all by yourself, Monsieur."

Their eyes meet past the facades of their masks for a moment. He feels vulnerable just then; exposed. It's an uncomfortable feeling at first, of course. He'd been so guarded since they'd broken up. Even before then. But, as it wears on, he realizes that some part of him has missed casting aside the proverbial armor with someone you could trust.

Though he thinks about her words for a moment, ultimately he shakes his head. "Some of us bear crosses others can't see, and it's our responsibility to protect them from it," He responds, his hand gentle against her waist as the music swells. Around them, Illumise and Volbeat glow.

The words are out before she can stop them. And once they float past painted pink lips, there's no taking them back. Luka sucks in a breath but forces herself to maintain eye contact with the prince— for once, she doesn't want to back down.[break][break]

"If you care about someone, really care about them, the least you can do is be honest with them," she continues. Their conversation is taking a turn, a stark contrast to the gentle waltz and glowing lights that bob and weave all around them. But now that she has Remiel here as a captive audience, she can't seem to stop herself.

Remiel didn't expect her to understand. And now he was wholly aware of the fact that, more than likely, she recognized him. Nonetheless, he took her statement into consideration and dwelled in the silence of that thought for a moment before speaking. "I suppose I can be a selfish individual," He remarks, recalling an instance where even Isra Nightingale had called him out on it. Even still, the difference between her and Luka was still night and day.

The pace of their waltz slows and his fingers loosen from her hands as he feels this momentary meeting drawing closer to its end. This wasn't a conversation he was prepared to have here. Not after he'd been in such a sullen mood the whole night. Certainly not while he'd been drinking either.

"While I agree with you, it is my belief that caring about someone is not limited to simply manifesting itself as honesty. Life is far more complex than that. Everyone is different. Everyone has their own reasons for doing what they do. Nobody is perfect."

His admission pulls a laugh from her. It's not exactly happy, but it's not dripping in hurt or sarcasm either. It just is— a little sound to fill the silence, like the chiming of a bell.[break][break]

But when the Prince seeks to draw away, Luka tightens her grip. Her fingers curl around his when they slacken, and she tries once again to meet his eye under the mask. She still isn't sure what she'll see there, but she wants him to see her. She's finally found enough mettle to confront him, even if it's not directly, and she isn't going to let him escape so easily.[break][break]

"I don't expect anyone to be perfect," she replies loftily. "All I've ever wanted is to be treated kindly...to be happy. To feel loved, and to put that same love back into the world. Maybe that's why I do the things I do."[break][break] A shake of her head sends roseate curls tumbling gracefully over her shoulder.[break][break]

"But I don't know why you do the things you do," she continues, dropping all illusions of pretense between them. "Sometimes I feel like I never really knew you at all."

Her methods work.

He's always been stubborn, but her determination is stubborner still. It forces him to look back up at her, their eyes locking onto each other as if magnetized in an instant. Suddenly, Remiel feels as if he's been transported back in time; back to the threshold of his apartment door, where he had lied to her and said goodbye.

Luka's words ring true. Rather than inspire, however, they only serve to fill the cup of his guilt more. "You never did..." He responds, the bitterness of shame tainting his whisper as their waltz slows to a stop. "Not entirely. And... I doubt you'll ever truly understand me at all. It's why we needed to separate, Luka. The things I was a part of, I—"

Didn't know how to explain it. Was too scared to admit to it. Knew she was better off not knowing at all.

"I'm not deserving of love."

You never did. The confirmation stings. Luka swallows the lump that forms in her throat when her suspicions are confirmed, though that's not enough to make her back down yet.[break][break]

"Don't say that," she says, staring up at him with an earnest ferocity that surprises even her. "Everyone deserves to be loved."[break][break]

Maybe he doesn't deserve hers after all he's done, but he has it anyways. Lingering affection is still built up inside her, and she doesn't know where else to put it. It's silly of her to feel hopeful now, after all this time, but she's always been a fool.[break][break]

"I won't know anything unless you talk to me. Please...I want to understand you, Remiel. You said you didn't love me—" It hurts to repeat almost as much as it does to remember, but Luka dredges it up anyways. It's suddenly the only thing that she cares about. "Was...was that a lie?"[break][break]

Her memories of the terminal are a jumbled mess. Whatever he'd confessed to her is lost amongst the discord: all that remains is a series of numbers and the feeling of him pulling her into his arms, though she can't remember why. Here and now, the spotlight shines and forces him to confront his wrongdoings once again, ripping out the sutures of old wounds and leaving them to bleed out on the dancefloor.

Even the steely look in her glare, and the weight of her words, does not convince him otherwise. Despite everything, she still didn't know the real reason why he'd left. She had no idea of the things he'd done. So how could she be so certain that he deserved love? As if she's read his mind then and there, however, Luka passionately continues.

His eyes shift away; ashamed. "I... I said what I said," For an intended result. For your safety. "So what does it matter anymore? Even if I took it all back, even if I said I was lying, that wouldn't change the fact that I did it. Why would you want to entertain someone like that?"

Just then, he lowers his hands and tugs them away from her own before taking a step back. "It's hopeless," He sighs. "But I need you to understand: I'm not good for you. I wasn't then, and I certainly am not now." He adds, flicking his gaze back up at her own with gravitas.

Such a blunt admission surprises even her. Luka flushes slightly and stares down at the floor, furious with herself for sounding so foolish. It's been months— they've been split up just as long as they've been together, at this point. To admit that she's still hung up on him after all he's done to her is truly pathetic.[break][break]

But even though every fiber in her being is urging her to flee, Luka stands her ground. For Remiel's half-baked explanations are truly infuriating, and her humiliation is quickly turning into righteous indignation. Even though he'd let her go she steps closer to him, standing nearly chest-to-chest as she stares into his expressionless mask. [break][break] "But I don't— I don't understand! How can I? If you're so bad for me, why did you ask me out in the first place? Why would you pretend to care? A-and why do you just keep coming back? You were the one who wanted to get involved. You were the one who asked me to dance tonight! Y-you can't just act like you want me and then pull back when it's convenient for you. The least you could do is tell me why!"
